The new expression targets bar-quality performance, pairing intensified proof with the brand’s accessible take on ultra-premium tequila.

One of Mexico's premier tequila distilleries has enhanced its offerings with a competitively priced, high-proof blanco in anticipation of Cinco de Mayo. Patrón 100 Proof may not represent the distillery's most groundbreaking innovation, nevertheless it appears to fulfil the precise requirements of cocktail enthusiasts and connoisseurs. Patrón has consistently demonstrated meticulous innovation; its new 100-proof expression exemplifies why the brand's offerings are nearly always deserving of anticipation. This release is noteworthy, despite not being the inaugural high-proof tequila on the market. Patrón is among the initial "ultra-premium" leaders to adopt the approach, indicating a wider shift within the industry.

Over the past decade, new tequila releases have predominantly been classified into two categories: extra añejo tequilas characterised by significant wood influence and innovative cask types, alongside celebrity-endorsed tequilas attempting to replicate the successes of brands such as those promoted by George Clooney (Casamigos), Dwayne Johnson (Teremana), Michael Jordan (Cincoro), Kendall Jenner (818), and others. The market is now extensively saturated with similar labels, to the extent where companies such as Cointreau are critiquing the trend in commercials like Aubrey Plaza’s “Any Tequila.” High-proof tequilas are more prevalent in the drinking culture, particularly among bartenders who have readily embraced elevated proofs for their cocktails. Samantha Newby, the vice president of global innovation and sustainability at Patrón, stated, "We are observing a significant change in the preferences of bartenders and tequila consumers." Individuals are increasingly scrutinising the production of tequila and are drawn to more profound, authentic agave flavours. With Patrón 100, we aimed to demonstrate the potential achievable through dedicated time, meticulous care, and substantial investment in traditional craftsmanship.

Patrón 100 offers a smooth drinking experience due to its proof level, with a subtle cinnamon spice emerging on the palate without dominating the flavour profile. This tequila initially presents a pronounced mineral character, then evolving into stone fruit notes and a citrussy brightness. The aftertaste is arid, featuring a blend of cooked agave, pineapple, and a subtle trace of fresh, grassy aromas as the alcohol dissipates. Patrón 100 is a well-distilled sipping tequila that is slightly more forgiving when served over ice. The most commendable aspect of this release is undoubtedly its $50 MSRP, which represents an economical option within a sometimes expensive collection. Patrón asserted that its 100-proof release is not solely intended for mixing; indeed, it is delightful when consumed plain or on the rocks. There is a certain pleasure in crafting a classic margarita using Patrón 100, allowing the tequila to prominently feature rather than diminish behind lime juice and other components.

Will the remaining prominent tequila producers adopt a similar approach? Highly probable. Legal restrictions exist over the designation of tequila and its permissible proof, however there remains some flexibility in these regulations. Legislation, similarly, can be amended. Currently, I am satisfied with this bottle and its pricing, and I anticipate playing with it as the weather becomes warmer and summer approaches.
