Daily Fish Oil May Safeguard Women Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Omega-3 fatty acids, included in specific fish, nuts, and seeds, have been celebrated for their health advantages, including enhancing cognitive function and diminishing bodily inflammation. Recent research indicates that the vital nutrient may possess the ability to decelerate the aging process, with the latest study demonstrating its potential benefits for women, notably in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.



Research Indicates Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Hold Greater Significance for Women


Women are approximately twice as likely to get Alzheimer’s disease compared to males; however, research indicates that increasing omega-3 intake may reduce their risk. Omega-3 fatty acids are a kind of unsaturated fats that have been historically linked to the enhancement of cognitive health. A recent study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association revealed abnormally low levels of unsaturated fats, especially omega fatty acids, among female Alzheimer’s patients. Notably, the diminished levels were absent in males with Alzheimer’s, suggesting that the disease may manifest differently between the sexes.



Dr. Cristina Legido-Quigley, a principal author of the study at King’s College London, stated: ‘Our research indicates that women should ensure enough intake of omega fatty acids in their diet, either through fatty fish or supplements.’ Clinical trials are necessary to ascertain whether altering lipid composition can affect the biological progression of Alzheimer’s disease.



Omega-3 May Enhance Healthspan


A recent study indicated that omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to a healthier, longer lifespan. A significant clinical trial, published in Nature Aging, investigated whether specific therapies can prolong humans' healthspan, the duration of life spent in good health prior to aging-related decline. The study encompassed 777 people aged over 70 from Switzerland, monitored over a three-year duration.



Researchers discovered that older individuals consuming one gram of omega-3s daily exhibited slowed aging pace three months slower than their counterparts in the study, as assessed by sophisticated biological instruments known as epigenetic clocks. Individuals who engaged in regular exercise and consumed vitamin D supplements exhibited diminished indicators of aging.



Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, a clinician-scientist at the University of Zurich and a principal author of the study, stated: ‘Omega-3 influences various mechanisms of aging, including its anti-inflammatory properties.’ Likewise, vitamin D and physical activity confer other advantages. We contemplated whether engaging in any of these differential approaches yields an incremental advantage.



She stated: ‘Although the effects may seem minimal, with a three to four month reduction in biological age over three years, if maintained, they could significantly impact population health.’



The study identified additional advantages of omega-3s, such as a 10 percent reduction in fall incidence and a 13 percent decrease in infections among the elderly. “This is the most significant trial to date suggesting that a simple supplement may aid in decelerating biological aging,” said Bischoff-Ferrari.



What Foods Are Rich in Omega-3?


Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that fulfill essential roles in the body. Since the body cannot synthesize them independently, it is essential to obtain them from our diet. They can be found in foods such as:
