Crowned after an intense finale, the private chef claims the title following a standout performance in the competition’s final round.

Baty, a self-taught chef from Carlisle, credits his culinary skills primarily to his mother, Barbara. ‘Everything traces back to her kitchen,’ he said in an interview with BBC Radio Cumbria. ‘She showed me that cooking for people is one of the most generous things you can do, that you can make someone feel genuinely looked after through what you put on a plate.’ He mentioned this on MasterChef: The Professionals, stating: ‘While the other boys were playing football, I was at home baking cakes with my mother.’
However, it was not until later in life that Baty resolved to transform his culinary interest into a profession. Baty, at 39, began by holding supper clubs at his house in East London before relocating to New York to work at a soul food restaurant in Harlem. Upon his return to the UK, he secured a position in the kitchen at the esteemed London restaurant Berner’s Tavern, subsequently working on a farm in the Lake District, use the cultivated product to bake bread and prepare dishes with cattle and vegetables from the area.
The chef thereafter resolved to apply all he had acquired and establish something unique, therefore The Wandering Cumbrian was conceived. Baty provides private chef services, pop-up events, and takeovers for distinctive dining experiences, collaborating with clients to develop personalised menus. He employs techniques and food combinations that captivate him, consistently conceptualising dishes mentally, contemplating flavours and textures—a skill he designates as his 'mind mouth.' Baty characterises his culinary approach as 'contemporary British with global inspirations,' stating, 'I believe my finest dishes are grounded in nostalgia and significant experiences from my life.'
The MasterChef champion currently resides in Whitefield, Greater Manchester, with his wife Katherine and their two offspring. In addition to his culinary pursuits, he delights in singing, blues music, and fell walking. Baty frequently posts recipes on his Instagram @the_wandering_cumbrian, with dishes such as apricot and rose wine purée used in a lamb tagine dedicated to his wife, cheesy chips, wild garlic pasta pomodoro, and crispy dumpling pancakes.
