Annually, on the inaugural Saturday in May, focus shifts to the Kentucky Derby, one of the most ancient athletic events in the United States, first conducted in 1875 at Churchill Downs. The Derby is frequently seen as America's nearest counterpart to Royal Ascot, merging premier horse racing, fashion, social customs, and a beverage culture centered around the Mint Julep, the event's official cocktail since the 1930s. It is America's Derby-day equivalent of a Pimm's Cup, if you will.


The beverage is intrinsically linked to Kentucky's whiskey legacy, with around 95 percent of the world's bourbon being manufactured in the state, and this origin elucidates why brands like Jim Beam advocate for the drink. The event is so intimately linked with the Mint Julep that over 120,000 are served during Derby weekend, utilizing around 10,000 bottles of bourbon, along with substantial amounts of fresh mint and crushed ice. The race lasts merely two minutes over a distance of one and a quarter miles, hence its designation as ‘the most exciting two minutes in sport.’ Conversely, the Mint Julep is a protracted, leisurely beverage intended for enjoyment at a relaxed pace.


Freddie Noe, the eighth generation master distiller at Jim Beam, states on the cocktail's significance in Derby culture, 'It has been the official drink of the Derby since 1938, and it is rarely served outside of Derby weekend.' It has become quite ritualistic. An annual anticipation, like to the Honey Deuce at the US Open or a Pimm’s Cup at Wimbledon. The cup and the garnish distinctly enhance the serving experience. The cocktail originated in the late 19th century and gained popularity in the American South as a pleasant warm-weather beverage poured over crushed ice. Its incorporation into the Derby in the 1930s reinforced the regional custom. Noe can attest that the Mint Julep is 'an exceptionally pleasant cocktail' that is 'perfectly adapted to the capricious Kentucky weather in May.'


Selecting the appropriate bourbon is essential for this traditional preparation. 'Bourbon, particularly Jim Beam Black aged seven years, is ideally suited for this beverage due to its profound flavor profile at seven years and a heightened proof of 90, or 45 percent ABV, which enables the flavor to withstand the dilution from the melting crushed ice,' states Noe. He states, "The caramel and baking spice notes enhance the fresh mint, rendering it an exceptionally refreshing beverage."


The essence of the Mint Julep, as to any exemplary cocktail, resides in its simplicity, with quality bourbon, ample crushed ice, and fresh mint, served chilled, preferably in a frosted metal cup. This is a guide on preparing a distinctive beverage at home to commemorate the Kentucky Derby.



Classic Jim Beam Mint Julep Recipe


Ingredients:

  • 50ml Jim Beam bourbon

  • 10 fresh mint leaves

  • 1 tsp sugar or 10 ml sugar syrup

  • Crushed ice

  • Fresh mint sprig to garnish


Method:

  1. Add the mint leaves and sugar to a julep cup or sturdy glass. 

  2. Gently press the mint to release its aroma without shredding the leaves. 

  3. Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice. 

  4. Pour over the bourbon. 

  5. Stir until the outside of the glass feels cold and frosted. 

  6. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig before serving straight away.
