Earlier this year, Plates London achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first vegan restaurant to obtain a Michelin star. The restaurant commenced operations a year ago in East London, led by chef Kirk Haworth, who had worked at esteemed establishments such as Sat Bains before securing the Champion of Champions title on Great British Menu. Haworth adopted a vegan diet following his Lyme disease diagnosis, initially operating supper clubs with his sister Keely before establishing his inaugural restaurant, Plates. Tasting menus highlight British ingredients and are seasonal: in summer, patrons will enjoy delicacies such as Isle of Wight tomatoes with house-made ricotta and frozen tarragon, caramelized lion’s mane mushrooms, and grilled lemon ice cream accompanied by whipped custard. This location is highly frequented, so ensure you make reservations well ahead of time if you wish to experience it.

The Spread Eagle

The Spread Eagle, London’s inaugural entirely vegan pub, offers a sustainable reinterpretation of traditional pub cuisine. Located on Homerton High Street, the menu emphasizes fresh ingredients, featuring offerings such as a plant-based burger, a vegan interpretation of traditional pie and mash, and a Sunday roast comprising beetroot wellington and a cashew nut roast. Beverages also vary with the seasons, as house wines, vodka, and gin are provided in refill packs. Sustainability is prioritized, featuring a minimal waste policy in the kitchen and the utilization of local producers, including Hackney Gelato and Totally Wild.

Purezza

Vegans need not forgo pizza, as demonstrated by Purezza, a wholly vegan pizzeria that established itself in Camden after gaining recognition in Brighton. Purezza produces its own vegan mozzarella in-house using fermented brown rice milk, rather than the traditional cheese often seen on pizza. The selection of toppings is extensive, including shaved aubergine, truffle, and wood-smoked tofu, all served on a delectable sourdough base, with gluten-free or hemp flour alternatives also offered. Vegan alternatives to classic side dishes are available, including mac and cheese and dough balls, along with a selection of delectable sweets — we suggest the salted caramel brownie.

Holy Carrot

Concealed within the Knightsbridge health center Urban Retreat is Holy Carrot, which provides plant-based cuisine intended to promote internal nourishment. All items are devoid of processed sugar and additives, emphasizing variations of traditional recipes. The Holy Maki consists of vegetarian sushi rolls crafted from quinoa and cauliflower rice, and the BLT incorporates smoked tofu and potato-based 'bacon.' Accompany with a green juice or a Rose Negroni, crafted with VII Hills Gin, rhubarb liqueur, and Rose Vermouth.
